The meeting commenced after 9:30pm. Doles, a short time before, had projected an image on the giant movie screen over the Town Board's heads. It depicted a large, multi-family dwelling.
Doles began the meeting by bringing up local law number 4, whose public hearing will occur at the end of November. Local law number 4 will change the zoning of single family homes with accessory apartments to disallow accessory apartments. It also includes a provision to allow hotels.
Simply put, this new law is political vengeance against the alliance, as well as to any Town of Monroe homeowners who wish to have an elderly parent live with them at some point.
In addition, it's a benefit to the KJPE interests who own large parcels of land (the 507) who could now, if this law passes, build "hotels" on their property.
Doles began his propaganda speech by pointing to the image projected above him and stated that this is what we can expect to see ALL OVER MONROE if we don't pass his new law. It was a fear tactic, and it was working- a few people in the audience who are not accustomed to Doles' manipulations, became worried.I responded to Doles' nonsense by saying "It was your zoning board that allowed that multi family unit to be built".
The building he projected on the screen is on Raywood Drive in Monroe. It's part of the 507 acre annexation area and its inhabitants are Satmar. Doles was insinuating that his new local law must be supported by the public or else these homes will be all over Monroe.
These statements were lies.
Many members of the alliance have purchased single family homes in the Town of Monroe. Some have taken advantage of the accessory apartment allowance since most have large families. The alliance did not vote for Dan Burke a few weeks ago and Harley is losing a much needed ally on the Town Board. This is why he is passing this local law. No other reason. It's political vengeance, plain and simple.
I have no problem with the creation of a new comprehensive plan, a tightening of the zoning in areas of Monroe, and even a short moratorium while the zoning kinks are ironed out-
but I reject any attempt to exact revenge on ANY group of people by enacting laws which are designed to hurt one group while helping another (the KJPE).
I began asking questions, as did a few others in the room such as: Didn't your zoning board approve that building? (Referring to the projected image), and how would this local law prevent buildings such as that one when the zoning board can grant variances? These questions were unraveling the Supervisor. He began shouting at me. He accused me of making deals, he told me I was "busted", he told me that buildings like the one projected above him were my fault, he stared at me, mocked me, taunted me to the point where even Gerry McQuade was urging him to stop. His face was twisted and strange- he looked like a man possessed.
I decided to leave- I didn't think I could take much more abuse, and as I got up to leave, Doles stopped speaking and said, "hang on, I want to watch", and he stared me down as I walked out of the theater.
The video of this entire encounter will be posted on this page later today.
The bottom line is this: Doles wishes for you to believe that United Monroe made a back room deal with the Alliance for votes. This didn't happen. No deal was made.
Harley simply can't believe that the promise of good government is enough to win over the hearts and minds of citizens, because he's never tried to do that.
So, you will see in the coming weeks, attempts by Doles to frighten you, to convince you that high density is coming your way unless this local law is passed which is simply not true.
Only a decent zoning board and a good code enforcement officer can prevent illegal or unsustainable development.
The zoning board members and code enforcement officer are appointed by the Town Board.
These synopsis' are a personal account and I fully recognize that inserted in them are my feelings and experiences- I also fully recognize that by being one of the leaders of this grassroots movement I am subject to scrutiny and am a likely target for our Town Supervisor, however, I am a mom, a volunteer, and frankly, Harley Doles' behavior last night towards me was very unsettling.
We all need to stick together- not splinter- and stay United. Help is on the way. We will all breathe a sigh of relief when Mike McGinn and Tony Cardone take their positions on this Town Board and restore sanity come January.
I can't wait.
Thanks to all who participated in the hearing last night- who show up- who support- who vote- who donate- who volunteer. You are United Monroe.
